Once again Casey James Prestwood & The Burning Angels were nominated for Best Honky Tonk Band in 2016! Unfortunately, we didn't bring home the award, but a great time was still had by all.
When all your friends are touring musicians, getting to see them regularly is quite rare. The Ameripolitan week really helps in getting everyone together in the same place at the same time. Friends from all the world converge on Austin, TX and share in celebrating the roots of American Music.
A lot of impromptu jam sessions take place amongst the many showcases around town for nominees. Friends sitting in with friends at their various gigs is always a great thing for the community as a whole. This year Paul Pigat was gracious enough to join us for our Chicken Shit Bingo gig at The Little Longhorn Saloon and we had a BLAST picking guitar together.
Charlie Thompson singing a tune with us was quite a treat. Following James Hand and his great band at The White Horse was a highlight, but when James joined us on stage during our set, it was a true honor to back him up! Getting the honor at the after party again was yet another highlight for me. Getting to play guitar with/behind the likes of James Hand, Shaun Young, James Intveld, Rosie Flores, and Chris Casello among many others ( you know who you are and I thank you so very much!!)...what an honor! Doing what you love most with people you respect is a great great feeling!
There are so many great musicians out there and to walk amongst them is special to me. I must say the amount of people (musicians and music lovers) who recognized me, stopped me to say hello and were sincerely kind with their words and time, MEANS THE WORLD TO ME.
Thank you all so much for your kindness and generosity! I hope I continue to be part of the music you all love. I still believe in the power of music!
The most moving moment of the week was Charley Pride. His acceptance speech, his stories, and his performance brought me to tears. My grandmother Lina (the one y'awl like to ask about on the back of my jacket ;) is a big reason I love the music that I do. Charley was one of her absolute favorites. I doubt neither of us ever thought that her Mijo would be at a point as a musician where he and Charley would be recognized at the same music events. It boggles my mind really.
To top it off, my amazing wife Christie was able to fly in last minute and be by my side at the awards show. She was able to meet so many of my awesome friends from around the world. She was there to sing along and weep with me as Charley was on stage. She was there when the great Bill Kirchen was walking through the lobby and recognized ME of all people and stopped for a chat.
I tour a lot and rarely does she get to share in my "professional" life. What a great way to introduce her to some of what I get to experience regularly! All the kind people that I get to associate with really did me proud with how gracious and kind they were to her. Thank y'awl!!
